What I have Learnt about knives

I am a knife fiend, anything sharp and shinny, including axes, hatchets and saws get my undivided attention.

I spend hours looking at, playing with and showing off my small but growing collection. From basic EDC pocket pals, to the fixed blades outdoor companions we all seem to need when camping, hiking, fishing and exploring.

Lately I have been asking myself why are these “things” on the knifes there, and what are they called and why so many different options. I understand that the knife you choose to carry is the one you feel meets all the stuff needed to do the chores for which you carry it for. For example a Bushcraft knife , Basecamp knife, Hunting knife or EDC pocket pal.

My question to myself was “What makes them different and why.” To learn more about this I decided to start at the beginning. Simple right….

Wrong. I didn’t even know half the names of parts associated with knives in general and types of knives specific. So the journey begins.

This is what I have learnt so far….

NAMES OF THINGS ON A KNIFE.

They say a picture is worth a thousand words, well how many words for a video. I have no idea abut putting one together was long and tedious ad hopefully made sense. So If you care to learn with me check out the first in a short series of “my learning about knives and things.”

NAMES OF THINGS ON A KNIFE.

Like I said this is a first in a short series I will be working on. Next up…Blades, Grinds and other knife parts.

Another Sentimental buy

As you know I am a sharp and shiny addict. I cannot pass up a chance of touchy Feely when it comes to a good looking knife. Well actually any knife that catches my fancy….so there I was…
And I saw a knife named KUDU. Nuff said. A name from my youth….here you go…
The KUDU LITE from Cold Steel. A knife with a very strong Southern African heritage

“BPS Knives B1CS Bushcraft knife – Review Cutter an Coffee”

As you may have noticed I am a sharp and shiny fan. If it sharp, shinny and cuts I am interested. I look at alot of knives, axes, hatchets you name it. My favorite knife is the Bushlore from Condor knives. Probably the best bushcraft designed knife out there. Certainly one of the most popular.

Lately I have been looking at folding knives particularly from Europe. I own a Opinel No 8. Great knife and very popular amongst pocket EDC fans. I was researching other Europen makers and happened across another knife maker from the Ukraine. Although they specialize in fixed blade I decided to have a look….well. they got my attention, speaking of sharp and shiny.

They have a number of “based on the …” knives. Of course one was on the Bushlore. Priced at alot less. So I got it.

The Aventurer, another great belt knife from BPS Knives.

Well let me tell you…no wait let me show you. Check out my review on my YouTube channel. Click the link below. I am sure you will be as impressed as I was. They certainly got my attention. In fact I am now the proud owner of a couple of different models from BPS Knives. All full tang, sharp and shiny, well made with a very nice sheath to boot.

OLD Bear Knives

I was surfing again. Came across these beasties. Very nice little folders similar to the Opinel knives out there. Only priced right and personally I prefer thier blade lock.

Give em a look.

Something to do…

I was going through my “stuff” today. It’s change of seasons time. So that means checking my packs and goodies I take outdoors with me.

Winter is here and in Minnesota that’s the long word for cold. So I update my packs every season to make sure I am set for the season.

While doing this I was rummaging around I my stash of fire starters and noticed I had a Small ferro rod in there. Thought nothing of it and continued on.

Later on I was outside doing other winter chores…picking up dead fall from the trees in the South 40. I picked up a small piece and was about to add it the the continually growing pile when I had a vision of that small ferro rod. So ……

I took the wood and made me a handle for the ferro rod. Why…well because I could and it was a quick little project that turned handy when I figured out the rod will go into my OLD BEAR folding knife sheath along with the knife…..nice!!!!

So here’s the visual story

MAM knives – Another bargain from Europe. A “steel” for the price – on YouTube

I have been looking at the European folding knife market lately. Having owned an Openel No 8 for a while now and was so impressed by the Quality and above all its popularity world wide. Price is just the icing on the top.

However when I posted a review on my YouTube channel, a subscriber suggested looking at some other from Europe. To my horror I found a couple of others, all in the same style, From companies that had almost the same background but from 3 different counties. Only…THEY WERE EVEN MORE LESS EXPENSIVE.

I will say the overall quality of these copies was not quiet up to Frances Opinel. It was not by much. Looking at them you could easily mistake them for Opinels.

This quick…lol.., Post is about one of them. MAM Knives from Portugal. Have a look see.

And while you there check out the other ones I reviewed. Fast becoming my FAVORITE EDC , the OLD BEAR from Italy.
